The Past life of Shanti Devi

Shanti Devi was a girl living in Delhi in 1930s. At the age of 4 she kept repeating to her parents a story that she claimed to be her past life. The little girl was saying that she was from a place called Muttra(today Mathura) and her name was Ludgi. She also claimed that she had 3 children and that she died in childbirth.
Her parents, at first, thought that this was just a story coming from her mind and they kept discouraging her. At the age of 6 she tried to run away from her house. Her teachers were soon intrested to learn more on her story. They interviewed her. While explaining to them, sometimes by using words and phrases of the Muttra dialect, the reasons of her attempt to run away she mentioned the name of her "past-life husband".She told them again that she and Kedar Nath had three children and that she died ten days after giving birth to her third child.

The next step for her teachers was to investigate the story that Shanti told them. They were surprised, when they discovered a man called Kedar Nath living in Muttra  that had lost his wife three years earlier. His wife was in fact named Ludgi and she had died ten days after giving birth to a son. They soon invited him to Delhi. In a last attempt to see if the memories of the girl were in fact true and not fictional, Kedar arrived to Delhi pretending to be his brother. Shanti, though, recognized him at once and she gave details to him of his life with Ludgi, that even Kedar was soon convinced that she was the reincarnation of his dead wife ,Ludgi.

Mahatma Gadi that heard the story of Shanti Devi created a commission to investigate further the case. They took Shanti to Muttra, where she recognized several family members including Ludgi's grandfather  She also stated that Kedar did not keep promises he made in her deathbed. The commission report concluded that Shanti Devi was the reincarnation of Ludgi.
